World Day Against Child Labour is observed on June 12th every year to raise awareness about the issue of child labour and to take action to eliminate it. The day was first observed in 2002 and is now recognized as a global event.
Child labour is a serious problem that affects millions of children around the world. It refers to the employment of children in any work that deprives them of their childhood, interferes with their ability to attend regular school, and is harmful to their physical and mental development.
In India, child labour is a major issue with an estimated 10.1 million children between the ages of 5 and 14 engaged in child labour. The Indian government has taken several measures to address this issue, including the enactment of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2016. This act prohibits the employment of children under the age of 14 in any industry and also imposes penalties on those who employ children in hazardous industries.
To stop child labour in India, there are several steps that can be taken. These include:
1. Raising awareness: creating awareness about the issue of child labour and its consequences can help to change attitudes and behaviors.
2. Providing education: ensuring that all children have access to quality education is key to preventing child labour.
3. Implementing laws: strong laws and their enforcement are necessary to prevent child labour and protect the rights of children.
4. Supporting families: providing support to families living in poverty can help to reduce the need for children to work.
5. Promoting ethical consumerism: supporting companies that do not use child labour can help to reduce demand for child labour in industries.
Addressing the issue of child labour requires a multi-faceted approach that involves government, civil society, and the private sector working together.
