Death by intentional self-directed injury, suicide, is an indicator for Sustainable Development Goal 3.4.2. Globally, suicide is a significant preventable public health problem, and it is the second leading cause of death among younger people aged 10–34 years, the fourth leading cause among people ages 34-54, and the fifth leading cause among people ages 45-54.
Every year 703000 people take their own life and there are many more people who attempt suicide. Every suicide is a tragedy that affects families, communities and entire countries and has long-lasting effects on the people left behind.
People who have experienced violence, including child abuse, bullying, or sexual violence have a higher suicide risk. A breakdown in the ability to deal with life stresses, such as financial problems, relationship break-up or chronic pain and illness, experiencing conflict, disaster, loss and a sense of isolation are strongly associated with suicidal behaviour.
Suicide rates are also high amongst vulnerable groups who experience discrimination, such as refugees and migrants; indigenous peoples; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex (LGBTI) persons; and prisoners.
#WorldSuicidePreventionDay is observed on September 10 each year to promote worldwide action to prevent suicides. Various events and activities are held during this occasion to raise awareness that suicide is a major preventable cause of premature death.
We must stretch out our hands to someone who may need help. We can all learn the warning signs of suicidal "ideation." If we spot them early enough, we can take action.
We have invited professionals and Intellectuals from seven spheres of society to share their photographs, quotes with 'semicolon mark' on their palm or wrist with black ink. This small step can inspire people suffering from mental stress to move towards a positive path, can give someone the courage to live... can make someone believe that their 'story' is not over yet.
And we are overwhelmed to receive some of the most astonishing pictures and quotations that indulge people to think emotionally and seriously about this issue.
At, Swapnil Saundarya Label, we believe that such awareness programmes are the savvier ways to encourage people to contribute their services for the betterment of our society.
WHY SEMICOLON?
In a literary sense, the semicolon represents a decision by an author to continue a sentence, rather than ending it. In life, it symbolizes a choice to keep going rather than stop, which is particularly poignant for people battling suicidal thoughts, self-harm, and depression.
Talking about this issue is an important first step in ridding society of the idea that mental health issues should remain hidden.
This World Suicide Prevention Day, let's pledge to lend emotional support to the one in need and promise to live and let live.
Let's join hands together to prevent suicide.....
Because ..........
You have the power to say, "This is not how my story will end."
