The year 2021 marks the 75th Independence Day which will be celebrated amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Every year, with the arrival of August 15, confusion occurs over the number of years country has been independent and which Independence Day is this year. Many people are confused if this is India's 74th Independence Day, or 75th. The source of confusion lies in not knowing the difference between "Independence Day" and "year of Independence".

India became an independent nation on August 15, 1947. India completed one year of independence on August 15, 1948; 10 years of independence on August 15, 1958; 20 years of independence on August 15, 1968; and 70 years of independence on August 15, 2017.

In 2020, India completed 73 years as an independent nation. In other words, we exclude 1947 and start our count from 1948. However, when we calculate the number of Independence Day the country has celebrated, we also include August 15, 1947, making it our 75th Independence Day.

‘Bharatiya Tiranga’

The Indian flag was designed in 1921 by Pingali Venkayya, an agriculturist from Machilipatnam. The National flag of India is a horizontal tricolor of deep saffron (kesari) at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom in equal proportion. The ratio of width of the flag to its length is two to three. In the centre of the white band is a navy blue wheel which represents the chakra. Its design is that of the wheel which appears on the abacus of the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka. Its diameter approximates to the width of the white band and it has 24 spokes.
