Literally meaning “safety” and “bond”, Raksha Bandhan celebrates the unique bond between a brother and his sister. On this occasion, a girl or a woman puts a tilak on her brother’s forehead and ties a rakhi around his wrist in a ritual that reaffirms the bond and support of her brother(s).

रक्षाबंधन भाई बहन के रिश्ते का प्रसिद्ध त्योहार है, रक्षा का मतलब सुरक्षा और बंधन का मतलब बाध्य है। यह त्योहार भाई-बहन को स्नेह की डोर में बांधता है। इस दिन बहन अपने भाई के मस्तक पर टीका लगाकर रक्षा का बन्धन बांधती है, जिसे राखी कहते हैं।

It is believed that Draupadi tied a rakhi on Krishna's wrist when he had injured his finger while using his sudarshan chakra against Shishupalal. While Krishna's hand was bleeding, Draupadi tore a piece from her sari and tied it around his finger. This is believed to be the reason why he saved her during her cheerharan by Kaurava.

शिशुपाल का वध कर लौटते समय सुदर्शन चक्र से श्रीकृष्ण की उंगली थोड़ी कट गई और उससे रक्त बह निकला. तब द्रौपदी ने अपने साड़ी का पल्लू फाड़कर श्रीकृष्ण की उंगली पर बांधी. उस समय श्रीकृष्ण ने द्रौपदी को वचन दिया कि वह इस वस्त्र के एक-एक धागे का ऋण चुकायेंगे. द्युतक्रीड़ा के समय जब कौरवों ने द्रौपदी के चीरहरण का प्रयास किया, तब श्रीकृष्ण ने अपना वचन निभाते हुए चीर बढ़ाकर द्रौपदी की लाज की रक्षा की.

According to another legend, the ritual of Raksha Bandhan was followed by Yama, the Lord of Death and Yamuna, the river that flows in India. Yamuna was sad as her brother Yama had not visited her for around 12 years. She shared her sorrow with Ganga. Ganga told Yama about it. On meeting Yamuna, Yama was happy to see all the hard work and preparation she had made for him. She tied a Rakhi on Yama’s wrist and, in return Yama blessed her with immortality.

मृत्यु के देवता यम और यमुना भाई-बहन थे. हालांकि, बारह वर्षों तक उनकी मुलाकात नहीं हुई थी. यमुना बहुत दुखी थी और  मदद के लिए देवी गंगा के पास गईं. देवी गंगा ने यम को उनकी बहन के बारे में बताया. यम अपनी बहन से मिलने आये जिससे यमुना बहुत खुश हुई. उसने यम का भव्य स्वागत किया और उनकी कलाई पर राखी भी बांधी. यम अपनी बहन के प्रेम से इतना प्रभावित हुए कि उन्होंने उन्हें अमरता प्रदान कर दी.

Rakhi saved Alexander- The Great's life. When he had invaded India, his wife Roxana had sent a rakhi to the Katoch King Porus and he had vowed to protect her and her husband. So, on the battlefield when he was about to kill Alexander he saw the rakhi and refrained from killing him.

यूनान का सम्राट सिकंदर जब भारत पहुँचा, तो उसका सामना भारत के पुरूवंश के वीर शासक पोरस से हुआ. सिकंदर की पत्नी ने पोरस को राखी भेजी. युद्ध में एक ऐसा समय भी आया, जब सिकंदर निहत्था पोरस के सामने खड़ा था. किंतु उसने राखी का मान रखते हुए निहत्थे सिकंदर पर वार नहीं किया और उसे छोड़ दिया.
