महात्मा बुद्ध के एक जापानी शिष्य थे, जिनका नाम होतई था। मान्यता है कि ज्ञान प्राप्ति के बाद होतई जोर-जोर से हंसने लगे और तभी से उन्होंने लोगों को हंसाना अपने जीवन का एकमात्र उद्देश्य बना लिया। इसी वजह से जापान और चीन के लोग उन्हें हंसता हुआ बुद्धा कहने लगे और इसी नाम का अंग्रेजी रूपांतरण है लाफिंग बुद्धा। चीन में होतई को पुतई के नाम से जाना जाता है और इन्हें फेंग शुई का भगवान भी माना जाता है।

होतेई की सबसे बड़ी खासियत ये थी कि वे कहीं भी हंसना शुरू कर देते थे। होतेई कभी भी कोई उपदेश या प्रवचन नहीं देते थे, लेकिन उनके व्यक्तित्व में एक ऐसा चुम्बकीय आकर्षण था कि वे जहां भी जाते थे सभी उनको घेरकर खड़े हो जाते थे।

होतेई का संदेश था कि किसी व्यक्ति का रोना या शोर मचाना उसकी व्यक्तिगत समस्या है। ईश्वर ने जिस दुनिया की रचना की है वो हंस रही है। चांद, तारे, फूल, पौधे, पक्षी सभी हंस रहे हैं और हम बैठकर रो रहे हैं। होतेई दुनिया को बस यही बताना चाहते थे कि लोग इस भ्रम से जागे और खुश रहें, मुस्कुराये और ज़िंदगी को दिल खोल के जियें।

Usually depicted as a stout, laughing bald man with an overtly exposed pot-belly stomach, laughing Buddha or celestial Buddha is better known as Hotei or Pu-Tai. It is said that his appearance comes from a Buddhist Zen monk who lived over 1000 years ago. His protruding stomach and jolly smile earned him this name. The Laughing Buddha is depicted in a number of ways including with his arms up above his head reaching towards the sky, holding a sack over his shoulder or simply sitting with his stomach out, waiting for a good old rub. The Laughing Buddha represents happiness, good luck and plenitude.
