Cage of Consent – The Dark Reality of Marital Rape Society Refuses to Acknowledge | Rishabh Shukla | Swapnil Saundarya

When "I Do" Becomes "You Must"

Marital rape is the crime society pretends doesn’t exist. In many parts of the world—including India—once a woman signs the marriage papers, her body is no longer her own. Consent is erased, replaced with duty. If a husband forces himself on his wife, it’s not “rape”—it’s just “marital relations.” How convenient.

The law protects rapists if they wear a wedding ring. Society calls it “a wife’s responsibility.” Families silence victims because “what will people say?” And the worst part? Most women don’t even realize they’ve been raped—because they’ve been conditioned to believe they can’t say no.

Legal Loopholes That Betray Women

In India, marital rape is still not a crime. The law recognizes rape only outside marriage, meaning a husband can rape his wife every night, and it’s completely legal.

Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code says rape is forced sex “without consent,” EXCEPT if the rapist is her husband.

Only if the wife is under 18 is it considered rape. If she’s 18+, her pain is ignored.

Even in countries where it’s illegal, victims struggle for justice—because proving coercion inside marriage is nearly impossible.

This is state-sponsored sexual slavery.

"Duty" or Devastation? The Emotional & Physical Toll

Marital rape isn’t just about sex. It’s about power, control, and dehumanization. Women trapped in this abuse suffer:

Physical trauma – internal injuries, STDs, and unwanted pregnancies

Mental breakdowns – PTSD, depression, and suicidal thoughts

Zero escape routes – because society tells them to endure, not escape

The message is clear: Women’s suffering is acceptable, as long as it happens within marriage.

Time to Dismantle This Cage

The law needs to change. Society needs to change. Men need to change. Women deserve full bodily autonomy—inside and outside marriage.

What Can You Do?

✅ Demand that marital rape be recognized and criminalized.

✅ Support survivors—don’t silence them.

✅ Educate people—marriage is not a license to rape.

Consent doesn’t expire after marriage. Rape is rape—even with a wedding ring. It’s time to break this cage.
