Education System In India: A personal Experience

ಹದ್ದಿನಂತಿಕ್ಕು ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞ ||

Sarvajña (Kannada: ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞ) was a Kannada poet, pragmatist and philosopher of the 16th century. That is tripadi (Three lines) about educated person, in translation, “Face of the educated person is charming (attracts all), one without education have charm of eagle of abandon village, in Sarvajña’s words!”

Education is one of our fundamental rights (According to Constitution) in India. Constitute says every citizen has right to Educate. Our government has made all the arrangements to educate its citizen through numerous government and private schools. Various not for profit organizations are also striving to provide better education to those who belong to vulnerable section of the society. Same way some of the wealthy families gave away their agriculture lands to construct schools / hostels. These schools include well-structured syllabus and make subjects like Mathematics, Science, social science, Languages (depends on the state regional language + two optional (Hindi & Sanskrit, English) plus sports compulsory for all levels i.e. from class 1st to 10th. The overall structure looks very interesting and it covers all the things which we required at the secondary school level. Once done with secondary school depends on the area of interest students can opt whatever they want to study further (Science, Arts, Commerce, Diplomas to name a few).

Now, after the few structural analyses about the Indian education system, all looks pretty settling. Catch is that, how well the code of conduct of education system carried out?  matters more. Well it’s not meeting the expectation of what it should meet! Reasons may be many, but none bothered to addressing them, either it may be student / parents or may be by the teachers.

Indians are majority of middle class (by their financial status). They continued that status in their thinking (thought processing) as well. No offence but that class always want to play safe, like in being their comfort zone (win–win) that they even don’t bother to think beyond that. I simply mean to say that they want their kids to study well, get good marks (no matter how much they understand what they study), get job and settle down (irrespective of area of interest).

- My personal experience –

I must say am the luckiest child who got good education and people around me are of the same wavelength, be it my parents and my teachers.
I started my schooling in one of the good convent schools in my home town, I was like clean slate ready to get use (learn) whatever you write on it, not knowing much apart from little about number system and basic mathematical calculation.

When I started my 1st standard, all the students were much ahead of me in reading and writing. I was good at what I know, rest I set my self to study what they teach. It was so happened, knowing my background (came from village) on request of my father, my class teacher in 1st standard take special interest in me for teaching. She used to run class within class (she has to teach all the subjects to whole class and a special class for me as I was not aware of alphabets at that time. Loads of home work and every day she used to observe my studies. With her unselfish and act of kindness, I was able to cope up with the whole class in just 6 months. She was like an angel for me. She continued to guide me throughout in my primary and secondary schools. But the code of conduct is not always same with everyone in various schools.

As per my personal experience, some of the things that I observed throughout my studies really opened my eyes…… These are as follows:

·       The teachers are very much biased based on marks you opt in tests. If you study and get good marks you will be treated like angel by teachers and you will get more attention and care from them, they also make sure you maintain same consistency in every test and in annual exams. Teachers tend to become least concerned about others which build inferiority complex in other students. The teacher’s  biased attitude and favouritism towards specific students demoralize the others in the class.  As a result, the fellow who trying to get good marks in studies and putting effort lose their interest and start complaining. Need not to mention that their interest in studies automatically goes down.

·       For majority of the teachers (modern days) teaching is just a job, they don’t care about how much percentage of students understand the subjects, they don’t put their 100% efforts in teaching or discover new ways to teach so as to make students understand what they teach them.

·       No proper counselling and lack of motivation from teacher’s side.

·   Some students are introvert or feel shy to ask any doubt, thinking other fellows may laugh at them.

·       I came across with very few teachers in my entire education time that they gave proper examples, reference books and along with teaching subjects, they taught about morality, how to treat others and  how to be a responsible citizen.

·  Some subjects like science and Mathematics need real life application example but unfortunately, most of the students won’t get that information and it became lame study.

·      Most of the time either teachers or parents doesn’t recognize the student’s area of interest. So, most of the students were lost and they just go with flow.

·    According to my experience while studying in different colleges, I must admit that “most of the lecturers are more worried about finishing the syllabus by hook or by crook and they don’t put themselves fully in that. But in the institutes like IIM (Indian Institute of Management), the professors are more particular about their lectures in comparison to the students with live demonstrations, examples, case studies and games to make the subject more interesting. They also expect and extract more from students which is more fun! likewise learning for both! Here, teaches are least biased and they encourage every student to ask question, no matter how silly it is……. They say “NO QUESTION IS SILLY QUESTION” for learner.

·       They have pre reading and post reading study materials which keeps all the students active in classes, improves interpretation and deepening the understanding of subjects. Students also equally motivate and coordinates their classmates. This is how they achieve common goal of real learning. Here, there is always healthy competition among the students and they motivate the students to give time to enhance their hidden talents like Singing, Dancing, painting, theatre, sports etc. apart from studies…. this is the added point.

These are some of my observations and experience while I was in school and college. I am not trying to criticize any one here but the time when I was a student, teachers were not much experimental about teaching methods, may be because of lack of opportunity or resources. But it is really deteriorating the level of our education and somehow destroying the future of our nation.

Just a personal experience and a bitter Truth ……..

Truly yours,
